After the success of our wrapped signal box project in the Sydney metro area , we were approached by Georges River Council to activate traffic signal boxes in southern suburbs of Sydney.

We sourced five artists with a diverse range of artistic styles and cultural backgrounds, four from the Sydney area and one a local from Georges River. Each of the five artists were assigned three boxes. Their digital artworks were printed onto vinyl skins and then installed onto traffic signal boxes at various public locations in the public area.

The designs reflect a broad range of art practices selected specifically for the locality of boxes. Melissa Ya’s playful designs were installed near the local library and public school. Helen Amanatiadis is a local textile artist who reimagined her woven artworks into digital designs for the first time. Indigenous artist David Cragg celebrated local flora and fauna such as the powerful owl in his illustrative designs, while Indigenous artist Jess Johnson’s bold patterns were a contemporary take on native Australian imagery. Painter and muralist Claudia Damichi’s distinct geometric style and colour ways gave her signal boxes a unique pop.

David Cragg was also commissioned to create a unique design for public planter boxes in Mortdale. He created a lush native scene that was installed along the outer edge of the planters.
