Public Art Activation on Campbelltown’s Queen Street
(Activations)

Art Pharmacy was recently approached by Campbelltown City Council to devise a public art strategy to revitalise Queen Street, the city’s main shopping precinct.

We worked with local artists to design a bold, engaging and locally inspired art ‘takeover’ of two empty tenancy locations along the street.

Throughout the past five decades, Campbelltown has rapidly transformed from a primarily agricultural area into a thriving multicultural hub with over 178,000 residents. The Queen Street Shopping Precinct its situated in the heart of Campbelltown. Once a popular destination, the Precinct was affected by the pandemic, and the Council was looking for a creative way to bring the beat back to the street.

Understanding the important role that art plays in contributing to the liveability, local identity, and wellbeing of the community, the Campbelltown City Council tasked Art Pharmacy with an activation strategy to revitalise the street.

After identifying a number of opportunities for potential public art, it was decided that an artist ‘Tenancy Takeover’ of two of the vacant locations on the street would be a unique and fun twist on the usually empty window fronts.

Art Pharmacy came forward with a large selection of Western Sydney, talented artists interested in the possibility of transforming an empty shop front with a creative display. The selected artists, Lotte Smith and Serwah Attafuah, were asked to design a concept that reflected the locality of Queen Street and created an interactive and engaging display for the community to participate in.

Throughout the conceptualisation phase, Art Pharmacy was in consist liaison with the artists and the Council to advise, guide and support the develop of this amazing project.

Lotte Smith and Serwah Attafuah’s works will be on view at 218-226 Queen Street and 209 Queen Street, Campbelltown, from June 25th to July 10th.

On Saturday 25th June, the program successful launched with a day filled with activities, programs and events organised in collaboration with the Council. This included a children’s workshop led by artist Lotte Smith and an in-conversation talk between artist Serwah Attafuah and Art Pharmacy Project Manager Brunella Muddle.

The end result? A completely reimagined and engaging street activation that amazes passerby, inspires the community and brings life and colour to Queen Street. The project has brought the Campbelltown City Council’s values to life with big, bold and beautiful art that engages with the community and aligns with the City Council’s Arts and Culture Action Plan.
